Russian figure skater Georgi Kunitsa shared how he proposed to Alena Kostornaia.
“Gosha, what role did my pressure play? In our interview on the YouTube channel ‘Bez Vody’ (Without Water), I asked if you would propose to Alena,” reminded Alla Shishkina, a sports columnist for Sport-Express and three-time Olympic champion in synchronized swimming.
Georgi Kunitsa: There was no pressure from you because by then (in April), I had already purchased the rings and planned everything in advance
When did you decide to propose?
Georgi Kunitsa: A couple of months ago.
Why did you choose a hot air balloon?
Georgi Kunitsa: I like to approach everything creatively. It seemed to me that this option was very romantic and unusual. Not in Paris, on the Eiffel Tower, but on a hot air balloon.
Weren’t you afraid of hearing ‘no’?
Georgi Kunitsa: I was afraid. I was very nervous.
Alena Kostornaia shared with Sport-Express about the proposal from Georgi Kunitsa.
How exactly did Gosha propose?
Alena Kostornaia: It was beautiful — on a hot air balloon.
Did you expect it? Did you say ‘yes’ right away?
Alena Kostornaia: I started suspecting something when Gosha began running away from me so that I wouldn’t look into his bag. I used to always put my phone in there, but this time I asked why he took it. I said ‘yes’ right away because I had long understood that he was the one and I definitely wouldn’t change my mind.
What were your emotions?
Alena Kostornaia: I was in shock and filled with joy. I was a bit stunned but didn’t cry.
