Alexander Zhulin: Now it’s not fashionable to be Russian

Alexander Zhulin about ice dance at World Championships:

To get into the top three you have to be not a Russian pair, to begin with. Yes, in 2006 it was different, but in which year the sanctions were turn on? Now it’s not fashionable to be Russian, unless you are Evgenia Medvedeva, I can’t come up with something else.

To tell the truth, before, it was easier to be Russians, now it becomes more difficult. But I do not want to blame the judges, we really did not skate at the level of Evgenia Medvedeva. If we all performed like her, then we would have four golds. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are really the best skaters, no questions, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron too. And the other five or six pairs can claim the third place.

And a comment from Ekaterina Bobrova:

There is a big minus in the system – this is a technical assessment, and you can never guess whether you can make the element on the third or fourth level, since everywhere the judges are different. If at each competition we had the same three judges, then we could Know what they want to see. Because you do it on the third-fourth level here and then you come to another competition and they tell you that it’s second level, you’ll never guess.

Ice dance is primarily a spectacle on ice. And the trump card of our discipline is to show the story so that viewers and judges can not take their eyes off this performance. It is necessary to do exactly such programs, and  we have certain ideas for the new season.

“Ice dance is primarily a spectacle on ice”…..

I naively believed it’s sport :)

Surely if an element’s complexity is ambiguous between levels 3 and 4, then you’d alter it to make it as monstrously complex as you can to ensure it’s objectively and subjectively a level 4, or you’d ditch it altogether and come up with something else that is monstrously complex.

As practice shows, the element does not have to be monstrously difficult to get the level 4. You just need to know the rules and know how to use them.
